Awesome piece Leslie! I soooo agree with you. I never thought there could be anything worse than 'spam' ... until I met a 'twitter robot' ... they are the worst!!!! I don't have any real world applications of this, but I would place my bets with your premise upon dealing with my future...

Nicely written indeed...

Yes, correct. As a phrase. It's very clear Hiring 2.0 works. Oops!

A very relevant post. People are starting to realize that they really do work for themselves, and must be the brand.

I presume you meant to say it was amusing that Hiring 2.0 doesn't work for me as a phrase, since the whole post is about how it works well in practice.

It's amusing that Hiring 2.0 doesn't work for you, because resumes and jobs are equally bad. If you trace the derivation of the word, "resume," it stems from the French word, "resumer," meaning to resume or to summarize.

In the social web space, when things are changing constantly (how many Twitter messages, Facebook status updates, and emails did you send out today?), why focus your experiences on a piece of paper that is a summary?

I used to have a resume. Not anymore. I now use a combination of everything you mentioned above, along with a newer tool called VisualCV - http://visualcv.com. It is portrayed unique to each person; Guy Kawasaki uses it differently than me, for instance.

And a job? Is that what someone really wants? A job? I'd rather have a relationship in my career.

Great advice, though! Aaron is a great example.

Leslie,

This is a wonderful, and obviously very relevant, post! I think you've really hit the nail on the head... the easiest way to to be presentable to employers (and peers) online is to keep it real. If you begin building your online presence ready to authentic and genuine, it's actually pretty fun--you just have to find the online tools that best reflect who you are in real life.

At this point, when I or anyone else searches for you online (especially on a relatively mainstream site like LinkedIn) and cannot find you, the first thing that comes to mind is, "What's wrong with this candidate?" The barrier to entry is so low (after all, these services are free) that it just makes no sense not to have an online presence these days. The easier you make it for me to find information about you, the easier you make it for me to hire you, invite you to speak on a panel, or recommend you to an employer.

Thanks for the mention in the post, Leslie! It is very kind.

Yours,
Ben Grossman

Leslie - great post! As you know (and pointed out), the concept of Hiring in a 2.0 World and a social resume are near and dear to my heart. Great advice above on how EVERYONE should be thinking about their new "resume" and how they can behave/take action in a manner that helps not hurts what's represented.

Thanks for the shout out/link love as well!

Best,
Aaron | @astrout
