@barbara it's very hard to maintain two personas and be genuine, at least for me. Then factor in that the world is changing, and becoming more interwoven and broad with each passing year - soon splitting personal and professional will not only be next to impossible, but detrimental.

Most of my offline world doesn't at all want to be involved in my online..in fact most don't get it. My online world is still brand new...and regrettably I haven't met most folks yet. Need to do better at meeting them in person in the coming year.
I've stopped trying so hard to convince those in my offline world why this matters so much. I'm always open to explaining/showing/helping...but talking to folks who want zero to do with it hasn't been a productive move on my part. I had to learn how to be excited on my own and that's been a good challenge.:)

I just keep two personae (is that the right plural?)...one for family and one for professional/creative pursuits. Sometimes it's tough but I'd rather let each group write whatever they want and not worry about boundaries.
